What are Thin Section Bearings?

Thin section bearings are characterized by their small cross-section relative to their bore diameter. This allows for significant weight and space savings compared to standard bearings.

They're commonly used in applications where compactness, low weight, and moderate load capacity are critical, such as robotics, aerospace, medical equipment, and precision instruments.

Duplex Arrangement (Back-to-Back or DB):

Mounting: The outer rings of the two bearings are pressed against each other, while the inner rings are similarly pressed together.

Load Distribution: This arrangement creates a wider effective bearing spread. The load is distributed between the two bearings.

Contact Angle: The contact angles of the bearings point outwards, diverging away from each other.

Advantages of a Duplex Back-to-Back Thin Section Bearing Arrangement:

High Radial Load Capacity: Provides increased radial load capacity compared to a single thin section bearing. The load is shared between the two bearings.

High Axial Load Capacity (in Both Directions): Capable of handling axial loads in both directions (pushing and pulling). The contact angle allows each bearing to efficiently resist axial loads.

High Moment Load Capacity: Excellent resistance to overturning moments. The increased effective bearing spread significantly enhances the system's stiffness and stability under moment loads. This is a significant advantage over a single bearing, especially in applications where the load is not perfectly centered.

Increased Stiffness: The combined effect of the two bearings results in a stiffer bearing assembly, reducing deflection under load.

Improved Accuracy and Precision: The increased stiffness and stability contribute to higher accuracy and precision in the application.

Better Load Sharing: Helps to distribute loads more evenly, reducing stress concentration on a single bearing.

Preloading (Optional): DB arrangements can be preloaded. Preloading increases the stiffness of the bearing system, reduces play, and improves running accuracy.

Preload is typically achieved by intentionally creating a slight interference fit during assembly. This is crucial for high-precision applications.

Duplex back-to-back thin section bearings are commonly used in applications that require high stiffness, load capacity, and moment resistance in a compact design, such as:

Robotics: Robot joints, especially those in industrial robots handling heavy loads and requiring precise movements.
